Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a game that has lived on famously through every Call of Duty since its release in 2007. Despite what some might think or say about the franchise, it’s this game that made the brand a household name.
Modern Warfare was a hit with gamers right off the bat. It featured fun gameplay with a story that was as action-packed and as thrilling as a Hollywood blockbuster. The story jumped around the world to different interconnected events that featured multiple protagonists from various military organizations. But, despite such a wonderful single-player experience, it stands as nothing when compared to its own multiplayer.
The Modern Warfare multiplayer was ground-breaking for the shooter genre. This game brought us “killstreak rewards” and “perks”, not to mention its fast-paced sixty frames per second (60 fps) frame-rate. It also provided in-depth weapon and gear load-out customization as well as a leveling system which coined the phrase “going prestige”. On top of all those things sat a fairly balanced competitive experience that became wildly popular.
Modern Warfare was not only popular with gamers, but it helped bring a whole new crowd into the mix. It brought people who don’t normally play games. Some of those people only purchase gaming consoles, just so they can play Call of Duty with their friends. The success of Modern Warfare doesn’t stop there however. The sales of this game launched the entire Call of Duty franchise into the top games in publisher Activisions line-up.
The success of Modern Warfare, and the popularity that grew around it, eventually found its way into the professional competitive gaming scene. The MLG picked up Call of Duty for professional play and teams were formed, contracts were made, and the growth of competitive gaming was assured. But gaming wasn’t the only competition inspired by Modern Warfare. In response to the overwhelming popularity and high-grossing sales of Modern Warfare, EA was inspired to bring back its Medal of Honor franchise in 2009 to try and compete with Activisions newest hit.
Even if you have never played Modern Warfare, its effects can still be felt in every Call of Duty since. The games differ here and there, but the winning formula is always there, especially in the multiplayer. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare changed the direction of first-person shooters, helped popularize professional competitive gaming, and that’s how it defined this generation
